BRUSHED COTTON M1: A CLOSER LOOK AT THIS FIRE-RESISTANT FABRIC

Ideal for professional and private use, brushed cotton is a fire-resistant fabric. Its quality/price ratio, finishes and colours make it an ideal ally for event organisers: explanations.

WHAT IS BRUSHED COTTON: DEFINITION

You've probably heard of brushed cotton if you work in events, upholstery, stand decoration or temporary sales areas. It's a term that's little known to the general public, but brushed cotton is a fabric that can be found in many different areas.

100% cotton fabric is a must-have for event decoration. The special feature of this fabric is that it has a brushed side. In other words, the knit has been machine-scraped to give it a velvety look. The other side will be more woven. This means that it is more rigid.

THE JOURNEY OF BRUSHED COTTON

The starting point is cotton harvesting, which takes place mainly in the United States, India and Asia. The cotton plant is grown for its fruits, 'bolls' which, once ripe, release cotton balls. After harvesting, the cotton is cleaned and the fibre separated from the seed. The cotton is then transformed into a usable textile by spinning.

After this stage, it is shipped to Europe for the weaving stage. The weaving phase is carried out on looms to produce 6 types of context and/or different widths (the width is often called the width in the clothing industry). Finally, the cotton arrives in France, where the fabric undergoes the final stages of ennoblement.

PROCESSING AND PACKAGING OF BRUSHED COTTON

Cotton is bleached using a gas containing oxygen. After this stage, the brushed cotton is dyed in accordance with REACH regulations and the OEKOTEX or GOT labels. The factory that processes our brushed cotton uses a biological treatment plant for its wastewater. Sewage sludge is recycled by farmers. And to take things a step further, our partner recycles 95% of its waste.

Once dyed, the cotton will be brushed, i.e., the fabric will undergo a mechanical treatment to give it a softer appearance. Depending on your decor or clothing requirements, you'll need to select from various fibres or fabrics. Options include the renowned cotton, available in brushed variants on one or both sides, fleece, a heavy fabric brushed on both sides or twill, which is thicker and features a herringbone weave for increased durability. The advantage of brushing is that the cotton can be stuck on to apply a logo.

Following this stage, our cotton will be fireproofed by submersion in accordance with the standards required in France (M1 or M2 depending on the destination of the fabric and our product references). The fabric to be flame-retarded is soaked in a dip tank containing a flame retardant so that the fabric is soaked in the flame-retardant solution. The fabric is then dried by suspending it in the open air. Drying time may vary according to humidity (measurement of the moisture content of the air). Find out more about fireproofing.

The final stage consists of packaging the brushed cotton into rolls and making them available in our Orly warehouse. Fabrics are generally packaged in rolls 50 metres long. This standard can be used for a number of event decoration projects.

We stock over sixty colours of flame-retardant brushed cotton in different weights and widths to meet all your production needs.

WHAT ARE THE RANGES OF BRUSHED COTTON?

CTN has a wide range of brushed cotton. There are several depending on the weight and width of the product. The 85gr range comes in 3 colours, white, ecru and black, ideal for making very fine velums. The first range is cotton in 140gr/m² and 165gr in 260 cm wide. This range is perfect for decorating a stand or making tablecloths for buffets. This makes it the perfect decorative fabric. And lastly, the 165 g range in 310 cm width, which allows larger formats to be produced quickly. If you want a thicker fabric for real blackout, we also have a range of blackout fleece or 100% blackout fabric.

IS THE COTTON AVAILABLE BY THE METRE OR BY CUT?

To meet all your requirements, CTN offers all its cottons cut to size. Fabric by the metre is an ideal solution for all decorating projects. In addition, you can easily make cotton tablecloths.

HOW IS CTN BRUSHED COTTON USED?

Brushed cotton is used by all professionals who need to make a garment (curtains, hangings, tablecloths), dress or decorate a space. Its primary use is at trade fairs and exhibitions, where it is used to clad the wooden partitions of stands. It is still very often used for this application thanks to its low cost and quick installation. For trade fairs and exhibitions, cotton must be M1 fire-retardant. M2 brushed cotton is widely used by marquee hirers to make velum, which decorates tent ceilings and hides metal structures. Brushed cotton is also used to make curtains to separate areas during seminars or to make tablecloths for catering buffets. Black brushed cotton is very popular with the world of entertainment and the stage. It is an essential consumable for hiding a control room, hiding decorative elements or quickly making stage skirts. This is the stage fabric that each actor on the stage carries with them. CTN brushed cotton is also used for theatre or shop window design thanks to its wide range of colours.

IS PRINTING ON BRUSHED COTTON POSSIBLE?

Printing on our brushed cotton is possible! Moreover, this allows you to personalise your decor, window display or event at a lower cost. Personalisation has been a major trend in recent years, especially when it comes to decor. So why deprive yourself of a decorative solution that has become affordable? You can now distinguish yourself by a logo, a message or a visual.

IS BRUSHED COTTON ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY?

Cotton is environmentally friendly for several reasons. First of all, it is made of natural fibre. The fabric then has an OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 label. This means that the fabric has been checked at every stage of the treatment. The label certifies that the fabric does not contain chemicals harmful for health. On the other hand, cotton is recyclable. It will be used for thermal insulation.

WHAT CAN BE DONE WITH BRUSHED COTTON?

Brushed cotton is perfect for making. It's a soft fabric that's easy to cut with scissors. This fabric can be used to make large wall hangings by assembling strips, and can easily be used to make curtains or tablecloths. We can tailor-make curtains to your specifications (eyelets, knots, hems, sleeves, snail hooks, Velcro fastenings, pleated curtains).
